LAKES AND RIVERS OF THE JULIAN ALPS
The Julian Alps are a mountain region of stunning alpine lakes and crystal-clear rivers, timelessly tinted in a remarkable emerald hue. This is also a land of spruce and larch forests, of high-altitude mountain pastures where you can still find an authentic, indigenous environment and way of life. It is a truly alpine world that has preserved its own distinct character — a place where you can experience magnificent moments embraced by unspoiled nature and breathtaking views.
The hiking tour Lakes and Rivers of the Julian Alps is everything a true hiking enthusiast simply has to experience. These are not epic high-alpine summit trails; rather, it is a carefully selected combination of the most beautiful connecting mountain trails and pleasant, easier paths that lead us to lakes and into the most stunning, experience-rich nature of Triglav National Park.
This holiday is designed for true connoisseurs — those who believe in the motto back to nature, back to local people — up to the mountain pastures where you can still taste sour milk and cottage cheese, where the scent of wild nature blends with the atmosphere of summer grazing. It offers the greatest number of beautiful hikes through timeless, extraordinary landscapes, combined with just the right level of comfort and the opportunity to savor an authentic and still remarkably preserved alpine heritage.

Itinerary
On this day, you will take a short train ride from Ljubljana to Lesce (Radovljica), a charming small town with a beautifully preserved main square. The hike follows a scenic trail along the Sava River, leading through typical Upper Carniolan villages all the way to Lake Bled and into the centre of Bled.
It’s a very pleasant walk, full of interesting sights and local character along the way.
After experiencing Bled and the beauty of Lake Bled, an exceptionally scenic hiking tour awaits, leading us into the heart of the Pokljuka forests. This area is renowned for its vast spruce woods, and along the way we will also encounter raised peat bogs rich in unique vegetation.
On the Pokljuka plateau, considered one of the most beautiful parts of Triglav National Park, hiking becomes a true meditation — in complete peace, walking over soft moss and surrounded by the richness of pristine forest nature.
This stage of the journey is simply inspiring, filled with new discoveries in an unspoiled natural environment.
At first, we will walk through rich spruce forests and across Planina Zajavornik, one of the most beautiful alpine pastures in the Julian Alps. From there, we will gradually descend along the western edge of the Pokljuka plateau toward the gateway of the Bohinj Valley.
We will reach Mostnica Gorge by walking through the Mostnica River valley, famous for its remarkable and deeply carved gorges. Before long, we will arrive at the magnificent Lake Bohinj, considered one of the most beautiful natural wonders of the Julian Alps.
A wonderful hiking stage, full of fascinating natural details — refreshing and deeply enjoyable.
The Triglav National Park is renowned for its stunning alpine lakes, which play a vital role in sustaining wildlife and preserving the fragile mountain ecosystem of the Julian Alps.
We will set out on a pleasant hiking tour into the heart of the park and its lakes. On this day, several hiking options are available: we can choose a shorter route, a medium-length walk, or—if we feel energetic and enjoy longer distances—a full-day hike through some of the most beautiful parts of the Julian Alps.
It is a true experience of the park: admiring crystal-clear alpine lakes, immersing ourselves in pristine mountain scenery, and visiting a traditional mountain hut where we can enjoy a simple alpine lunch.
Leaving Lake Bohinj behind, we head toward the western part of the Julian Alps, where the emerald Soča River reigns supreme.
We will first travel along the remarkable Bohinj Railway, built during the First World War, all the way to Most na Soči and Tolmin. From there, we will explore the spectacular Tolmin Gorge and continue our journey toward Kobarid. Here the landscape begins to open up — the valleys grow wider, and the surroundings feel more spacious and airy.
We will admire the Soča River, truly something extraordinary — its vivid emerald colour is simply captivating.
A pleasant hiking day, rich in history and natural wonders.
This stage will delight us with the soothing sounds of the Soča River, as the trail follows its course for most of the day.
Our first highlight will be the magical Kozjak Waterfall, hidden in a moss-covered gorge — a truly unforgettable natural spectacle.
As we continue, pleasant riverside paths will guide us through several local villages and small settlements until we reach Bovec, widely known as the Slovenian capital of adrenaline sports. In the summer months, the town is especially lively and full of energy.
A relaxing yet vibrant day, filled with natural sounds and uplifting energy.
On this day, we will once again surrender to the sounds of the Soča River, and then continue along the beautiful Koritnica River.
Our path will first lead us to Fort Kluže, a historic fortress and protected natural monument set dramatically above the gorge. From there, a pleasant and scenic mountain trail will take us toward the valley’s end and onward to Log pod Mangartom — a rather secluded settlement in an exceptionally beautiful location, offering magnificent views of Mangart and Jalovec.
For those with extra energy and a stronger desire for hiking, there is an additional scenic route past the unique hillside village of Strmec na Predelu, continuing up to the Predel Pass. From there, we will transfer by private vehicle across the western Julian Alps (the Italian side) to Kranjska Gora.
An exceptionally dynamic day, rich in landscapes, history, and unforgettable alpine experiences.
The final day of our hiking journey in the Julian Alps — Oh, how quickly it has passed, you will surely say.
This tour, embracing the most beautiful lakes and rivers, has a way of spoiling you — leaving you wishing for just a little more at the end.
Before returning to Ljubljana, you may use this day for one last scenic walk. A wonderful option is a hike to the stunning Laghi di Fusine (Belopeška Lakes), just across the border in Italy, surrounded by dramatic alpine peaks. Alternatively, you can enjoy a relaxing stroll to Lake Jasna, located right next to Kranjska Gora, with crystal-clear waters and magnificent mountain views.
After soaking in these final alpine impressions, we return to Ljubljana — enriched with memories of pristine nature, emerald rivers, and unforgettable mountain landscapes.
