JULIANA WALKING TRAIL

JULIAN ALPS – THE MOST BEAUTIFUL MOUNTAINS

Why is it, that the Julian Alps, Slovenia’s highest mountains, are so special? Why is it, that hikers and alpine climbers decide over and over again to reach the so steep and high summits of the eastern Alps? Why is that the Mount Triglav has been for the past 3 centuries such a desired mountain to climb for so many? Why is it that we find numerous huts and bivouacs everywhere in the mountains? Doesn’t this indicate the Julian Alps to be rather demanding mountains, which require alpine experiences, proper physical preparedness and a good hiking plan?

For us, locals, the Julian Alps are undoubtedly the most beautiful mountains in the World. In the summertime they are boasting in silver colors, while in the wintertime, covered in snow, they create a magical image of the landscape. A view of the mountains is always breathtaking.

JULIANA TRAIL

The Juliana Hiking Trail surrounds the Julian Alps. It avoids climbing steep and exposed mountain walls, yet it displays breathtaking views on every step of the Trail. It is not about reaching the high summits, but to become one with nature, discover hidden trails, magical forests, remote villages and astonishing places that remain hidden for most.

The Juliana Hiking Trail will take you far away from the noisy crowds and big cities, to an awe-inspiring alpine lakes and valleys, crystal clear rivers and enchanting meadows. You will slow down, take a deep breath of fresh air and just live for the moment. You will get to know yourself and in the end find yourself.

NOTHING BUT JOY

I know this Trail well. I never hiked it in full, I know, lazy me, but I hiked it in several pieces and parts. Enough, so I can tell you that there is something exceptional about the nature there. It liberates you from your everyday life and thoughts. It overflows you with nothing but joy.

The Trail is rather easy, therefore accessible to every eager hiker out there. Although the total distance of the Trail is rather long, the daily hikes are designed to be of just the right distances, diverse, picturesque and reaching every turn, makes the hiker eager to reach the next one only to discover what is hidden there.

HIT THE TRAIL. WALK.

I invite you to hit the Trail. Walk. Discover. You will not regret it. I promise you – it is worth it. Catch your pace and just enjoy. See you soon, under the high mountains! You never know, we might meet somewhere along the Trail.

Juliana Trail is a 267-km-long trail around the Julian Alps, Slovenia. The trail leads through valleys, over mountain passes, forests, through urban and rural areas and along the Soča and Sava rivers. Enjoy Julian Alps and great Juliana trail forever!

“The Juliana Trail won’t be the most challenging hike you’ve ever done, but you won’t find an experience quite like it anywhere else.” – Owen Clarke, Outside Magazine

It is not easy to choose just a few highlights, as every stage of the Trail will take you past many magnificent sights; from Begunje village, where Slovenian folk music was born, Studor and its famous »Toplar« hayracks, Baška Grapa valley which is home to the thickest tree in Slovenia, town of Bovec, known to be the adventure capital of the country and Fusine Lakes, one of Italy’s best-kept secrets, … are just to name a few, but without doubt the most popular sights along the Juliana Trail are:

Kranjska Gora | Small and quiet Alpine town, surrounded with the majestic Julian Alps.

Bled with its famous lake | World-famous little town, with a fairytale image of a lake and a  small island in the middle of it and medieval castle sitting on top of a 130-meter cliff overlooking the Pokljuka Plateau, an alpine gem, hidden away from large crowds. Deep forests, amazing meadows and breathtaking views of the Julian Alps.

Bohinj with its alpine lake | A green oasis in the very heart of Triglav National Park. Its magical lake is truly one of a kind.

Soča River | Slovenia’s emerald pearl. Crystal clear water, white rapids and nothing but pristine nature surrounding the river. Its natural beauty seems almost unreal.
