There are not many things that are more suitable for the development of children and the happiness of the family, such as hiking trails, exploring the mountains and experiencing the natural beauties. The mountains offer extraordinary views, soothe and regulate children’s energy, thus connecting families even more firmly into a happy unit. The mountains are a getaway from everyday worries, they are beautiful, the most sparkling children’s “playground”. Exploring the mountains, high mountain pastures, crystal clear lakes, streams, experiencing mountain huts, meeting other hikers … all this is a useful school for life.

EVEN FOR FAMILIES WITH SMALL CHILDREN

The Julian Alps with the central area of Triglav National Park offer children and families wonderful hiking trails, exploring the scenic peaks, an abundance of natural phenomena and also an insight into the rich history of the area. On the trails west of Triglav, you can find many military fortifications and heavy iron equipment, which testifies to the high-altitude battles that took place here over a hundred years ago. Many of the hiking trails that run in the park lead to high mountain huts. From the hut then the paths lead to the next mountain hut or at least past the mountain bivouac. The latter is important because, thanks to the infrastructure, exploring the high mountains becomes accessible to a wider circle of mountain lovers. Even for families with small children.

TREKKING TAKES PLACE ON WELL-MARKED MOUNTAIN TRAILS

I can say that one of the most beautiful hut-to-hut treks, suitable for families, is the one that connects the Bohinj valley with its famous lake, through pastures and high mountain lakes all the way to the Soča valley, which lies at the west end of the park. Trekking takes place on well-marked mountain trails, which are also safe due to the easier and less open terrain. The paths are not too demanding, they usually ascend and descend slightly, with a small daily altitude difference in ascent, which means the terrain is moderately varied. During the four days of trekking, families sleep in three different huts, where there is a basic culinary offer and some modest comfort in an otherwise pleasant environment.

On average, we walk for three to five hours each day, which can be a bit challenging for some, so it is necessary to prepare properly for each stage. However, the mountain environment is picturesque, varied, full of little secrets and something new awaits us at every turn, so children can easily complete the hiking stages – of course, since the trekking, with a carefully prepared route, a selection of suitable stops and a suitable length, is intended especially for children and their parents.

A REAL HIKING TREAT

Usually, the most beautiful multi-day – multi-stage – hiking tours are those that circle the mountains. The Julian Alps, which belong to the eastern part of the Alps mountain chain, have their own “modern” long-distance Juliana circular route. The latter, however, has absolutely nothing to do with our great crossing of the mountains (traverse). The long-distance trail runs along less scenic routes, along gravel and asphalt roads, through inhabited valleys, forests…

Our Julian Alps Traverse is a real hiking treat, which takes you along the most beautiful and scenic and well-marked mountain trails from the north-east to the south- west of this beautiful mountain range. I can write from my own experience, as a local person who knows the Julian Alps really well, that the tour is one of the most beautiful multi-day mountain crossings.

JULIAN ALPS TRAVERSE CONNECTS MOUNTAIN HUTS ALONG THE ROUTE

On just under 60 kilometers of hiking trails, visitors – hikers can experience the true wilderness of this mountain world. This high route – the Julian Alps Traverse – connects mountain huts along the route into a multi-day hut-to-hut hiking adventure. During the hike, the hiker stops at seven serviced mountain huts: each one is special, has its own offer, history and its own caretakers…

Mountain huts with overnight accommodation are key to a comfortable and safe crossing of the Julian Alps, as they provide the hiker with shelter, rest and warm meals with a sufficient amount of drink. Fluids are important on this tour! Since in certain parts of the tour it is a distinctly rocky area with protected high mountain lakes, it is difficult to find drinking water in these parts, especially in the drier summer time. It is good, however, that the stages (hiking days) on the crossing are designed in such a way that the hiker spends the night in a mountain hut every day, thus providing himself with everything necessary at the beginning and end of each day’s stage.

COMPLETELY BEAUTIFUL AND EXTRAORDINARY MOUNTAINEERING

The Julian Alps Traverse runs from east to west and takes the hiker from the famous Planica all the way to the beautiful valley of the Soča river under the upright mountain Krn. The path in the central part runs underneath summit of Mt. Triglav (2864m), the highest mountain of the Julian Alps. In this part, it also passes over the highest mountain passes and peaks on the way with wonderful views of the Triglav north wall, the extraordinary Vrata valley and the green Trenta valley below. From the Dolič mountain hut, a fairly elegant ascent to the king of the Julian Alps is possible, It takes two to three additional hours of ascent and another 2 hours of descent back to Dolič.. It requires the hiker to get up early, as well as some additional mountaineering experience and will.

Traverse, even without climbing Triglav, is a completely beautiful and extraordinary mountaineering experience. The remoteness, open mountain paths, wonderful views, ruggedness of the mountains give this tour the special charm of a true hiking classic, which can easily be compared with the popular Dolomites.

REALLY EXTRAORDINARY, SOMETHING SPECIAL – UNIQUE

But the traversing offers, for us locals, the most beautiful part of the Alps, as well as an extremely pleasant walk through the valley of the Triglav lakes, which is one of the most beautiful areas of the Julian Alps. On the way, the hiker also reaches Lake Krn, which also belongs to the special and protected area. On three of the five stages, the mountain environment alternates with mountain vegetation and high-altitude lakes. It is also of extraordinary value that the entire crossing area belongs to the protected area of the Triglav National Park. This only confirms that the natural environment is really extraordinary, something special – unique, and that it is necessary to preserve it as such. It is clear that the tour belongs to those that take place in a sensitive natural environment and it is necessary to consciously participate in actions that have the least impact on the environment.

JULIAN ALPS TRAVERSE IS A HIKING EXPERIENCE THAT REMAINS FOREVER

We like to say that certain things in life are the ones that have to be experienced. Mountain lovers are people who carefully plan their hiking tours and seek out the most beautiful areas that offer an exceptional mountain experience. The Julian Alps Traverse is definitely one of the must-do tours. For me, as the writer of this article and a passionate mountaineer, the Julian Alps are the most beautiful mountains in the world, and I have walked and explored mountains on four continents. All in all, the Julian Alps Traverse is a hiking experience that remains forever. It is a real hiking treat in a less crowded area of the Alps. In the unspoiled nature of Triglav National Park, which in places also offers a hint of that real exploration adventure. This outstanding tour simply does not leave the hiker feeling lightheaded.

MOUNTAINS WITH MARVELOUS VIEWS

I remember very well my first Mt Triglav climb from my early years of mountaineering, some 15 years ago. It was a pleasant summer day when my friend and I climbed the Northern Triglav Wall to the top of the mountain. We began climbing at dawn, when it was still dark and climbed up 1000m on a rocky pillar and reached the very top in the afternoon. It was one of the most beautiful and demanding mountain tours I have done so far up this greatest mountain of the Julian Alps.

Triglav is considered as one of the mighty mountains with marvelous views. On a clear and sunny day, one can see far across the Julian Alps, all the way to Grossglockner on the northwest and to the Adriatic Sea on the south. Triglav has numerous excellent paths from various surrounding valleys, which lead up to the very top in a meandering way. It is a mountain, which has to be taken seriously due to its height and steepness at the very top.

ROMANTIC EXPERIENCES

My experiences with The Mountain of the Julian Alps, which is also the highest in Slovenia, are very pleasant, I can also say romantic. As a mountain guide, I have spent many nice moments there with people from all over the world. Every tour to the top of the mountain – there have been over 80 so far – has been a unique story. People from all over the world carry in them numerous life experiences and a 2-day climb brings the group together. The tour is not the easiest one but also not the most demanding and that is why there is enough time and energy for a relaxed atmosphere.

MT TRIGLAV TOUR

We usually begin our tour early in the morning with pick-up point at the Life Adventures agency in Bled, where we quickly check personal equipment. If something is missing, we take with us an extra backpack, gloves and extra socks or jacket. Climbing equipment and all protection gear (helmet, harness, via ferrata set, light jacket, walking sticks) is prepared and provided by us. Pick-up is followed by a short transfer from Bled to Krma with an “ice-breaker” debate in the car in order for all in the group to get to know each other.

The first part of the hike takes us through the valley and later on across grassy and rocky slopes all the way up to Kredarica Mt Hut at 2515m. It usually takes approximately 5 to 7 hours of hiking to get up to the hut. Once we reach it, we have a chance to relax and enjoy a warm mountain meal. Later on we discuss the via ferrata climb to the very top of the mountain and take into consideration the weather forecast, conditions on the mountain and general state of the group. Sometimes we climb to the very top of Mt Triglav on the fist day – especially if the weather is looking better on the first day and if the group is feeling up for it, otherwise we go up next morning.

TOUGHEST PART OF THE CLIMB

The via ferrata climb from Kredarica to the very top is the toughest part of the climb. It is considered a semi-climbing trail. The route is secured at the most demanding and exposed parts by steel wires. We provide the best possible security for our guests at this part of the trail so they can have an excellent and most comfortable experience. My “best friend” is a short rope on which I tie our clients and take extra care. We also use via ferrata sets with which we attach ourselves to the steel cords.

The climbing part of the tour lasts approximately two to three hours, depending on the conditions and the fitness of the group. The feelings we get, when we reach the Aljaž tower, are indescribable. First there are no words and one can hear mostly screams of joy. Later on, when we manage to relax a bit and take in a few breaths of fresh air, the feelings and words become deeper and unforgettable. One mustn’t forget the traditional christening: spanking ones behind with a rope. This is especially for those who have reached Mt Triglav and such height for the first time.

WE DID IT! WE MADE IT! WE CLIMBED MT TRIGLAV!

Mt Triglav Climb ends upon return to the valley. There is still some euphoria present when descending back to Kredarica Hut, so an extra focus and caution is required. Concentration is important and I am aware of this until we cross the steep rocky heights and reach the plateau at the hut. There, we reach into each others hands, do happy high fives and sometimes give each other a good hug. Since the toughest part of Mt Triglav Climb is behind us, we deserve a cold beer or something good to eat as well as a bench for tired legs. It is true that the tour ends down in the Krma Valley, but Kredarica is already the point when one can relax, look each other in the eyes and say: We did it! We made it! We climbed Mt Triglav!

Triglav truly is a mountain that connects and inspires, time and time again.
